Neuter or spay it's the humane way. Any time of year, neutering and spaying your dogs is the right thing to do. And, the earlier the better. According to the ASPCA, as long as a puppy weighs more than 2 pounds and is 2 months old, he or she can be neutered or spayed. Many states have established low-cost spay/neuter programs that help make the surgery affordable. Call your local humane society or shelter to find out about a low-cost program near you.
Dogs need dental care year round. Poor oral health can lead to serious health problems in addition to painful tooth loss or gum disease. The buildup of plaque and tartar in a pet's mouth can cause periodontal disease, an infection that can spread through the bloodstream to the heart, liver and kidneys. Talk to your veterinarian about keeping your dog's teeth healthy and clean.
Consider fostering or adopting a homeless dog (or two!) from a shelter or animal rescue group (please see our "Links" below). Provide a warm, secure home to a dog well before the holiday season so he or she is adjusted to the new life before the hustle-and-bustle of the holidays arrives. What better gift to give yourself and your family than the unconditional love of a forever grateful dog!
Never feed your dog chocolate. Dogs are allergic to the caffeine in chocolate.
